Faubourg Marigny History being saved ! New Orleans Neighborhoods
Faubourg Marigny lies downriver immediately adjacent to the New Olreans French Quarter. The borbers are Esplanade Ave from the French Quarter and from St. Claude to the Mississippi River. press Street is the downriver boundry. The area was one of the cities first suburbs that developed in the late 1700s. The area is in a come-back mode. Creole cottages and a variety of residences make up the area.
Bywater, bounded by Press Street, St. Claude Avenue, Poland Avenue, and the Mississippi River, is just downriver from the French Quarter. Some naysayers call this region "backwater" because at first glance it seems like a wasteland of light industry and run-down homes. In fact, Bywater is in the midst of a renaissance. Originally, artisans, free persons of color, and immigrants from Germany, Ireland, and Italy called this area home. Now artists, designers, and residents who simply can't afford the Quarter or Marigny live in its Creole cottages and Victorian shotguns. Within this mix are some funky neighborhood restaurants and bars.
Most of the photos were taken of homes that had character, did not have trees or cars blocking the shots. They were chosen at random to give you ideas of the area and the type of homes that you will find.
"Creole cottages abound this area and so do buildings dating back from the influx into this section. The year 1810 is the earliest date that a building contract can be found for the Marigny. Spanish, French, Free People of Color, Italians, Germans, and Irish were among the first ethnic inhabitants to live in this section of the city. "
"The Marigny has seen a rejuvenation in activity in recent years. Neighborhood bars dot the streets in regular intervals. Tattoo parlors, jazz clubs, and various cafes and restaurants make their mark in this section, also. The beauty of this section lies in its proximity to the French Quarter but without the tourist activity that the Quarter offers. Walking through the Marigny, a person can feel the history and the beauty of this area."
