Algiers Point a 10 minute ferry ride from the New Orleans French Quarter and the New Olreans central business district is filled with unique quiet neighborhoods where the 19th century remains much alive. Named for Algier Bend which is a sharp turn in the Mississippi River. "The Mississippi, itself, is very much a part of life in the neighborhood, from the jaunty calliope of a passing paddle wheeler, to the drone of towboats carrying the nation´s commerce or the breath-taking sight of an ocean-going vessel towering high above the levee. " In 1895, the neighborhood suffered a devastating fire. The Algiers fire of a century ago destroyed many houses, leaving little standing except steps and chimneys. As a result, the neighborhood´s architecture is dominated by shotgun doubles. These were popular because they were very functional for the 1900 lifestyle. There were no 2 car families during this period. "Nevertheless, here and there, buildings of earlier styles--the elegant simplicity of Greek Revival columns, the steeply canted roofs of creole cottages, the elaborate decorative detail of the Queen Anne and Edwardian eras--survived the blaze, adding variety and architectural excitement to the peaceful streets."
